Northwest Community Credit Union Event

Recently Northwest Community Credit Union celebrated their 65th anniversary and wanted floral decorations that reflected how they began. In 1949 6 co-workers at Weyerhaeuser put $50 in a lunchbox with the intention of helping each other out. That year, Weyerhaeuser Springfield Credit Union made its first loan and soon became Northwest Community Credit Union.

The centerpieces for their celebration incorporated both the lunchbox theme and their roots working in the lumber industry.

Make it for Mom 2014

It’s quickly approaching that time year when we celebrate the wonderful women in our lives we call “Mom.” Every year, the Saturday morning before Mother’s Day, we open our store to as many children who will come and help them create their very own personal mini-floral arrangements to present to Mom the next morning.
MIFM 2009

This year, the 18th year of this annual event, Make it for Mom will be Saturday, May 10th from 10:30am to noon. The kids will have a marvelous time making arrangements with a personal touch that only they can add; the adults will receive a $5.00 in-store coupon to go towards any purchases they make that day; and any donations we receive will go 100% to the Relief Nursery.

Mark your calendar so you and your kids don’t miss out.

Eugene’s Favorite Mom 2014

eugene mother's day contestMothers are extraordinary. They’re not super heroes with an abundance of super-human abilities, but they could fool us. Because we’re around them all the time, it’s easy to take them – and their seeming super-powers – for granted.

The truth is we know how human they are, but these ordinary, every-day women find it within themselves to love, give and sacrifice in ways that can astound us.

Say “Thank You” To Your Office Staff

secretary's week 2014 In today’s fast-paced workplace, it is often easy to forget to stop and say “thank you” to your staff for all the hard work that they do. As the old adage goes “They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. A little gift goes a long way and flowers (or chocolates) send a clear message that you appreciate them.

This year, Administrative Professionals Week is April 21th to 25th. Currently, since its inception in 1952, it is the largest workplace event celebrated nationwide. Because of its emphasis on the value of administrative professionals, and the roles they play in their respective organizations, this week is the perfect time to show your appreciation.

With our selection of gifts we make it easy for you to say “thank you” because with flowers, you don’t have to cater to individual interests and styles. EVERYBODY loves flowers! We have something for every budget and have highlighted some of our favorites right here.

Easter Flowers Announce Spring

Easter is such a fun time for flowers because spring showcases such amazing flowers that are only available locally, and for just a short time. After the cold and gray tones of winter, the colorful and soft pallets of spring colors are welcome. We love using these local flowers in our Easter flower arrangements. Pussy willow, anemones, ranunculus and tulips scream “Spring is here”!

The whole spring season and Easter in particular represents renewal and new life. As the first bulbs begin to burst from the soil, so too does the hope for warmer days and garden planting. We take nature’s lead and are inspired every day with spring’s bounty.

Care Tips for Your Spring Cut Flowers

After the winter weather, the warm days and clear skies we had this weekend were a tantalizing hint that the cold will be gone for good soon – at least for the season. Sunnier skies, warmer weather and fun, outdoor activities are on our doorstep! I spot my boots on the shoe rack and long to put them away until next winter. Even though the weather hasn’t quite caught up yet (it’s getting there!) spring is here, and so are the happy colors and delightful scents of spring flowers and bulbs.

So, when you come by and pick up a bunch of these bright beauties,  what do you need to know about them to keep them cheering your home longer?

Daffodils: Daffodils arranged in a vase all by themselves make for a cheery, eye-catching design. If, however, you want to arrange a bouquet with daffodils and other flowers, keep this in mind: daffodils secret a sap when their stem is cut. This does the daffodils no harm, but it will cause other flowers in the arrangement to wilt. So here’s what we do when making mixed arrangement of daffodils and other flowers: we cut the daffodils to the height we want them and put them in a separate vase of water for about an hour to allow the sap to drain. Then – without cutting their stems again – we rinse them and add them to our arrangement.

Hyacinth: With their bright colors and sweet fragrance, hyacinth are very popular. When bringing hyacinth home for a cut-flower arrangement, don’t cut the woody, bottom part of the stem if you don’t have to. This helps the hyacinth draws up water, and it will last longer this way. If you’re working with hyacinth bulbs it’s a good idea to wear gloves. The bulbs are acidic and can cause skin irritation.

Tulips: Did you know that not only do their petals open and close depending on the temperature in a room, but tulips will continue to grow a few more inches after they’re cut? This movement in the design makes for a wild and alluring arrangement.

Anemones: When arranging with this beautiful, whimsical flower keep in mind that the petals will open in the light and warmth, so while anemones are pretty hardy, despite their delicate look, keeping them in a cool area in your home will help them last longer. Anemones will also continue to grow after they are cut!

Still Trending: Vintage Lace & Burlap

As we head into the 2014 wedding season the projected trends are becoming more concrete in terms of colors, themes and details for weddings. Lace and burlap is still extremely popular among brides whose weddings fall into the following categories: vintage, country chic, rustic, barn weddings and romantic but casual outdoor affairs.

Burlap was the #1 stem wrap of choice for all the weddings I did last year. Bridesmaid’s bouquets were wrapped with burlap while most of the bridal bouquets were a combination of burlap and lace treatments. I also incorporated the burlap in corsages and boutonnieres so that the whole look was cohesive. Burlap can be used as table runners, banners or wrapped around vases. Adding lace to any of these adds romance and softens the look instantly.

Bucks for Pearl Buck

Pearl Buck Center is a great organization here in Eugene that assists those with developmental disabilities with vocational, recreational and educational programs. March is National Disabilities Month and local businesses, including Dandelions, sell “Pearl Bucks” for $1 each to help raise money to fund these programs.

pearl buck center eugeneThere are 3 main programs at the Pearl Buck Center. Their preschool provides education and support to children of parents with disabilities. They also have vocational training and job placement to help those at Pearl Buck learn skills and attain independence and, through independence, a great sense of self-esteem. The LEAP (Life Enhancing Activities Program) creates opportunities for those with developmental disabilities to explore creative expression using art, reading, film & music, dancing, gardening and more.

These programs rely heavily on volunteers but need financial assistance to maintain their high quality that they provide. The Pearl Buck Center doesn’t just contribute to the lives of individuals but to the whole community as well. Show your support and put your name on the Pearl Bucks you purchase! At Dandelions, you can purchase a Pearl Buck when you are in the store, placing an order over the phone or choose it as an add-on item when ordering online!
