Make it for Mom 2014

It’s quickly approaching that time year when we celebrate the wonderful women in our lives we call “Mom.” Every year, the Saturday morning before Mother’s Day, we open our store to as many children who will come and help them create their very own personal mini-floral arrangements to present to Mom the next morning.
MIFM 2009

This year, the 18th year of this annual event, Make it for Mom will be Saturday, May 10th from 10:30am to noon. The kids will have a marvelous time making arrangements with a personal touch that only they can add; the adults will receive a $5.00 in-store coupon to go towards any purchases they make that day; and any donations we receive will go 100% to the Relief Nursery.

Mark your calendar so you and your kids don’t miss out.

Eugene’s Favorite Mom 2014

eugene mother's day contestMothers are extraordinary. They’re not super heroes with an abundance of super-human abilities, but they could fool us. Because we’re around them all the time, it’s easy to take them – and their seeming super-powers – for granted.

The truth is we know how human they are, but these ordinary, every-day women find it within themselves to love, give and sacrifice in ways that can astound us.

Bucks for Pearl Buck

Pearl Buck Center is a great organization here in Eugene that assists those with developmental disabilities with vocational, recreational and educational programs. March is National Disabilities Month and local businesses, including Dandelions, sell “Pearl Bucks” for $1 each to help raise money to fund these programs.

pearl buck center eugeneThere are 3 main programs at the Pearl Buck Center. Their preschool provides education and support to children of parents with disabilities. They also have vocational training and job placement to help those at Pearl Buck learn skills and attain independence and, through independence, a great sense of self-esteem. The LEAP (Life Enhancing Activities Program) creates opportunities for those with developmental disabilities to explore creative expression using art, reading, film & music, dancing, gardening and more.

These programs rely heavily on volunteers but need financial assistance to maintain their high quality that they provide. The Pearl Buck Center doesn’t just contribute to the lives of individuals but to the whole community as well. Show your support and put your name on the Pearl Bucks you purchase! At Dandelions, you can purchase a Pearl Buck when you are in the store, placing an order over the phone or choose it as an add-on item when ordering online!

Celebrating Amazing Women

Just around the corner (March 8) is International Women’s Day, a day to give recognition anWomansDay_1_404d honor to women throughout the world both past and present. First celebrated in 1908 International Women’s Day has gained traction as each generation of women has continued the fight for equality and show how remarkable a woman can be.

Valentine’s Day is for sweethearts and Mother’s Day is for moms but what about all the other amazing women who may not fall into these categories (or do, but still could use some extra praise)? Around the world many people give flowers are small gifts to show their appreciation for the women in their lives. We are certainly proud of Dandelions owner, Shirley Lyons, who was honored as the 2010 Eugene Chamber Woman Business Leader of the Year as is currently serving as the FIRST female president of the Society of American Florists in its 129 year history.

The theme for this year’s Women’s Day is “Inspiring Change” reminding us that although women have made leaps and bounds in the United States and much of Europe there is still a shocking amount of inequality throughout much of the world. Let’s take stock of our blessings, give honor to the women in our lives and encourage change to take effect world-wide.

Send flowers to work or at home or you can even stop by and choose a few stems yourself to hand to a friend, wife, mother, co-worker, neighbor, care-taker. The list goes on. Celebrate the women in your life!

Pink Birthday Party

Julianne recently created the floral decorations for a fun, “over the top” 50th birthday party held at the Hilton Hotel here in Eugene. Since they wanted everything pink, Julianne started with pink curly willow branches curled inside large bubble bowls with pink-tinted water.

To get the hydrangeas a hot-pink hue, she gave white hydrangeas a hit of floral spray to make them really pop in combination with the other naturally pink flowers. The large arrangements got a little extra pink glamour with hot pink rhinestone wrap and and explosion of pink flowers.

We love that this Birthday Girl didn’t shy away from the big 5-0 but instead celebrated in style!

Behind the Scenes at Valentines

People often ask what our busiest time of the year is. Hands down it is Valentine’s Week. Our staff of 25 increases to a staff of over 60 in order to process flowers, answer phones, make arrangements (nearly 1500 the week of Valentine’s) and deliver them all to happy sweethearts.

It takes a lot of coordination, planning and hard work to make all of this happen. We have an amazing staff here at Dandelions who are dedicated to creating an experience for each person who places their trust with us when they order flowers in Eugene as well as for the recipient who is gifted flowers.

In order to store such a quantity of flowers we bring in a refrigerated semi-truck the week before Valentine’s. Our amazing crew who processes the flowers when they arrive and prepares them for designing works tirelessly, and often in the rainy cold, to make sure the flowers are at their best.  Our design staff creates bouquets and gift packages for each order all day…often standing in one place most of the day. It’s certainly not a walk in the park to be a florist!

Our sales staff helps countless numbers of men (and women!) choose the right style for their special Valentine and our blessed delivery drives brave the elements to bring a smile to individuals around Eugene and Springfield.

Valentine’s is a special time of love and an opportunity to convey your feelings to those around you. We feel pride in working hard to make this day be special for you!

Delivery drives await their arrangements for their first deliveries of the day. We have a pretty nifty system for keeping all the orders organized so we know which driver takes what.

A Recap of 2013

2014 has arrived, and with it the freshness of new beginnings, hopes for a better year, and new years resolutions! While it is exciting to look forward to a new year imagining the adventures it will hold and planning a few of those yourself, this is also a great time to look back at the year we left and  learn from or laugh at it’s  experiences, and then go forward.

I’d like to do a recap of 2013 for Dandelions. So much happened last year that we’d like to remember it’ll be good to have it all in one place,  so here goes:

January:

The year starts off cold and foggy (as is usually the case in Oregon), but Bethany – Shirley’s granddaughter visiting from Minnesota – joins the design team and brightens the day:

Christmas Colors Inspire Me

I love the holiday season, but this year is especially spectacular. Not only did it snow this weekend, but the temperature in Eugene has stayed cold enough to keep it looking like a winter wonderland! A week into December, and with the lovely evergreens surrounding Eugene laden with the white, fluffy precipitation; the streets and rooftops snow-covered, the season has announced itself: Christmas is here!Dandelions Flowers & Gifts

This year, along with my usual reasons for loving the season – putting a tree up and dressing it up for the season; the festive decorations and lights around town; holiday shopping and wrapping (or bagging) gifts; anticipating fun family get-togethers; watching people go by all bundled up against the cold; Christmas music – I get to add a couple of  new ones to my list: the scrunch of footsteps in the snow; snow blowing off branches and swirling in the breeze against a blue winter sky. But I always come back to an old favorite: the red, white and green flowers we work with in the store. When the snow-tinted pine cones and Christmas greenery come out at work, it’s easy to get inspired, so I thought I’d give you a glimpse of some red, white and green floral inspiration at Dandelions:
