Spreading Happiness in Eugene: Petal It Forward

Petal it forwardOur team here at Dandelions sees the impact of flowers on recipients every day. We want to share that love so we will be hitting the streets of Eugene on October 7, handing out hundreds of flowers to busy commuters, students and shoppers. We are doing this as part of the “Petal It Forward” initiative, in partnership with the Society of American Florists (SAF), of which Dandelions’ owner Shirley Lyons is a past-president. SAF, retail florists nationwide and floral wholesalers are participating in this as a response to the release of new data by SAF showing the positive emotional benefit of flowers. You can follow #PetalItForward to see the events nationwide.

Various university research studies have proven that flowers have an immediate impact on happiness and long-term positive effects on moods. A new survey also shows that when it comes to flowers, it is just as good to give as to receive. Knowing this, Dandelions is going to spread some happiness to lucky Eugene residents and equip them with the means to spread that happiness further. Each recipient will receive 2 roses- one to keep for their self and an extra rose to give to a loved one, co-worker, friend or even a stranger!

Flowers convey emotion in a way few other “gifts” can. They let someone know you are thinking about them, offer sympathy or congratulations and can be a wonderful way to break down barriers and recapture that “human touch” among strangers. The March 2015 study surveyed 2,500 people throughout the U.S. and found that flowers have a significant impact on one’s emotions and happiness which is backed up by previous research studies on flowers by Rutgers, Harvard and Texas A&M (see www.aboutflowers.com/research for more information on the university studies)

Here are some highlights from the recent study to show why we feel it is so important to spread the love:

  • When it comes to happiness, it’s just as good to give flowers as it is to receive: 88% of Americans report that giving flowers makes them feel happy, while 80% reported that receiving flowers makes them feel happy.
  • Just being around flowers improves your mood: 76% of Americans agree that having flowers in their home or office improves their mood.
  • The best reason to receive flowers is “just because”: Women (92%) are more likely to agree with this, but the majority of men (three in four) also share this sentiment.
  • Florists to the rescue! Nearly 4 in 10 Americans indicate florists have helped them in a past or current relationship; most frequently to say “I love you,” or schedule a surprise delivery.

If we miss you during our Petal It Forward event you can still participate! Any time is a good time to Petal It Forward: come by Dandelions and pick up a flower or bouquet for yourself and a second one to give away. You’ll be amazed at how good it makes you feel.
