Graduation is upon us and many graduates (both high school and college) are adorned with leis during the ceremony and parties that follow. Why are leis worn for graduation?? The lei tradition clearly comes from Hawaii (who borrowed it from the Polynesians) who wear them for both daily use and for special occasions.
Here on the mainland we see leis at graduations because it is obviously a time to celebrate. Personally, I think any excuse to wear a fresh floral lei is fantastic! Some graduates order leis for themselves but they are often given as gifts by friends and relatives. Sometimes a person receives so many they can hardly see (see picture above!!).
The correct way to wear your lei is draped around your neck and hanging equally off the front and back of your shoulders. However you wear it, enjoy the celebration! Ho’omaika’i ‘Ana (Congratulations!)
